Vijayalakshmi is a senior working journalist with over 25 years of experience in print media. She did her BA (English Literature) at Fatima College, MA at American College, in Madurai, and M.Phil in Madurai Kamaraj University.
She started her career in journalism with The Indian Express in 1997 and is currently Senior Editor with Deccan Chronicle, Chennai.  Besides her career as a journalist, she likes mentoring students who have a passion for journalism. She has been invited to organise special training camps and internship programmes and deliver guest lecturers for students of journalism and mass communication in several colleges in Chennai and Madurai.  She has also been an external examiner for journalism courses in colleges. Her first book, Temples of Chennai, was released in 2016 by then TN Governor Rosaiah.
She is a Wetland Mithra, recognized by the state government, supporting the conservative efforts made in Pallikaranai marshland and championing the cause of
the environment.
